In this episode we welcome Matt McDavid of Purple Easel, a unique “Art Experience” located in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
In the podcast Matt shares how he got started, why he finds helping people find their inner artist so rewarding, and the importance of creativity to each individual’s ability to express themselves.
According to the PurpleEasel.com web site “Purple Easel is an evening out Art Experience. You bring the drinks and we provide all the painting materials. We take you step by step to recreate the evening’s featured piece, no experience required. You’ll be amazed at what you will accomplish! Laughing with friends, sipping drinks, and creating art is what we’re about. Many people make a party of it, some folks come alone to get away and engage in a little paint therapy.”
We had the opportunity to meet Matt and his team of talented artists first hand in a 3-hour painting class. Purple Easel offers some classes just for kids, and other classes open to kids and adults. Whatever class you attend you’re encouraged to just relax and have fun. The studio can seat up to 60 people. The class that we attended was nearly full, and many of the people in attendance had been to previous sessions.
Matt is very welcoming and personally greets each of the students. You’re permitted to bring wine and snacks if you want, which a  few of the attendees did. The idea is to make you as relaxed as possible and to reduce self-criticism.
One of the benefits of attending the workshop is that they help you to silence your “inner critic”, and encourage you to just explore your creativity. Below is a picture of Ian Kirkpatrick, one of the artists on staff, helping a student.
